I first crossed paths with Janet Tingey nearly twenty years ago when she was the head of book design and composition at Macmillan Publishing Company, shortly before the computer revolutionized the design industry. Here's the thing about Janet: she's just about the smartest person I know; she gets design and conversion like they're built into her at the cellular level; she's at least five times (but probably ten times) more responsible than you are; she's incredibly creative with solutions; she cares about the details, and I guarantee you've never worked with anyone more efficient or more sensitive to your needs. Okay, so that's six things. On top of which, she's fun to work with and really does have a wicked sense of humor. Prepare to be amazed!

Janet is on the shortest list I have; there are only three people on it. She is one of the best designers I ever worked with. Her work presents elegant, efficient solutions to difficult interface problems. She brings both a classical simplicity and uncluttered modernist feel to every screen. Her color choices are always a revelation; her font choices bespeak a long familiarity with the difficult and largely unheralded work of getting type to work for an interface and not against it. And her designs are utterly transparent; in situations where the content is meant to rule her work never gets in the way.

None of this includes, however, the pleasure of working with Janet. Even if she were a second-rate designer — and she is not! — her sheer professionalism would find her employment. She never misses a deadline and never displays impatience with even the most difficult client. She works very hard at listening, and is talented at building consensus. Last-minute changes neither intimidate nor surprise her. I recommend her on every possible level.

Janet is graceful under pressure and has saved the day on many occasions, with or without my actually asking her to do so! I love her design aesthetic but I love her attitude and helpful nature even more.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Janet. She was quick to understand my ideas and needs. She enhanced the original concept beautifully. She was attentive to the details that were important to me allowing me to be proud of the end product.
